Kayaking safety in cold water (anything below 68 degrees F) : Kayaking

I’m new here, and just want to alert anyone new to kayaking about the dangers of kayaking in cold water. This means any water under about 68 degrees F. A lot of you seem to be using recreational kayaks with open cockpits in the spring when air temperatures might be nice and warm, but the water is still cold. If you were to capsize for any reason in water under 68 degrees, even if you are wearing a PFD, you could get into trouble. Google “cold water gasp” and read about hypothermia. Everyone thinks they won’t capsize; their boat is stable. But many things can cause an unexpected capsize, even for experienced paddlers. Spring is the season when we most hear about fatal boating accidents. Thanks for reading, have fun, and stay safe.
